Nearest Costco, Monument or Satellite is an installation by Daniel Joliffe that locates the closest Costco, monument or orbiting GPS satellite with a high degree of precision. Drawing from ideas in the fields of psychogeography and geolocation technology, the work consists of a series of fourteen sculptures shaped like pointers, monitored by a central control unit. Each of the fourteen sculptures contains the electronics required to control a single arrow. Together, the elements create a swaying field of arrows that point to locations in a poetic, almost choreographic way. Ultimately, the installation is governed by materiality more than information. Nearest Costco, Monument or Satellite explores how we construct our sense of place in the contemporary environment.
